How To Warm Breast Milk With Sous Vide

Straight to the Point our Journey

My wife and I chefs and did a lot of research together. We had discussed before Sophie was born how to reheat the breast milk. Some things came up, like a bottle warmer microwave and using hot water from the tap

when Sophie was born, we did reheat the breast milk with hot water from the tap that was when it was less than an ounce, but when our baby started to get bigger it took longer to reheat Erin asked the question: Do you think sous vide is safe to reheat? I said absolutely! Because it's a precision cooker, you can have the sous vide at human body temperature

in this post today, and you'll learn what we did and do and what to look out for. We used sous vide machine to reheat our breast milk, following the guidelines set out by Human Milk Storage Guidelines. This method was quick and easy and ensured that the milk was kept at a safe temperature without any of the risks associated with other methods like microwaving or using hot water from the tap. So if you're considering a safe and effective way to reheat your breast milk, give sous vide a try. Here is why!

How to Precisely Warm Breast Milk (Proper Storage and Preparation)

When it comes to properly warming breast milk, the key is to ensure that it is done in a way that doesn't compromise the quality of the milk or its nutritional value while still preserving its temperature. Here are some tips on how to warm breast milk with sous vide and proper storage and preparation.

1. Start by storing your breast milk in clean, properly sealed bottles or bags that are clearly labeled with the date and time of collection.

2. Next, choose sous vide machine to use for heating your breast milk. Set the temperature to around body temperature (98-100 degrees Fahrenheit), and start gently swirling the bottle or bag of milk to evenly distribute the heat.

3. After a few minutes, check the temperature of your breast milk with a quick-read thermometer to make sure that it is within the recommended range for safe consumption. If it is too hot or cool, simply let it continue heating until it reaches the desired temperature.

4 . Once the breast milk has been warmed to the correct temperature, you can either feed it directly from the bottle or bag or transfer it to a separate container for freezing and future use.

Whether you're a new mom who needs to warm up your breast milk quickly and easily, or an experienced parent looking for a safe, reliable method of warming breast milk, sous vide is a perfect choice. If you're keen looking for a hassle-free way to warm up your precious breast milk, consider using this chef-approved technique!

You don't have to worry about those hot spots and more or having to throw it away because you ruined the nutritional value past 110F.

Breast Milk Storage Guidelines

Storage tips:

Store in the fridge: Breast milk can be stored in the refrigerator for up to five days. Freeze breast milk: You can freeze fresh breast milk for six months. To thaw frozen breast milk (if you are not using sous vide), place it in the fridge overnight or use a warm water bath (between 98 and 104 degrees Fahrenheit). Do not microwave or boil frozen breast milk. Reheat refrigerated or frozen breast milk: Gently swirl bottle/bag of milk and place in sous vide machine set at body temperature.

Safe Thawing of Breast Milk

We didn't have to worry about this. We would take the target temperature of 98.5 for the precise temperature and drop vacuum sealed bag (I wouldn't suggest this. It was overboard) or breast milk storage freezer bag into a plastic container ( Green cambro), and it would be heated up with a cook time within 4 to 6 mins about 4 ounces or 6 ounces.

Warming Breast Milk Safely and Easily with Sous Vide: A Guide for New Parents

1. Grab a container of water, things you can use a pot or, in our case use, a green cambro

2. place sous vide in a water bath (Anova Precision Cooker is what we have )

3. Turn on the bath water temperature to heat at 98.5F if you want full control, you can do this on your phone. We did that for a while

4. Reheat breast milk until body temp. You can use a thermometer to double check

What are the best containers to reheat breast milk?

The best containers to reheat breast milk are ones that have air-tight lids, are made of Glass or BPA-free plastic, and can withstand the direct heating process. Glass is ideal since it is inert, meaning it doesn't react with breast milk, and it can be easily cleaned in the dishwasher or boiled.

For a quick Dad hack, what containers to use for Breast milk in sous vide

The period of time may vary due to how much breast milk is in the bottle. Keep in mind these are our tests, and what we do/did is all refrigerated breast milk, but the milk bank my wife keeps in the freezer is the breast milk storage bags -

Dr. Brown Plastic bottle - 4 to 6 ounces will take the longest for 8 to 10 mins.

Dr. Brown Glass bottle - 4 to 6 ounces will take 6 to 8 mins

Breast milk storage - is the fastest. It takes 4 to 6 mins. We mainly use for the night for those hard nights when our child wakes up at random times of the night, usually for the sleep progression.

If you are trying to reach the ideal temperature and you don't want to put on your wrist to test if it is up to body temperature, you can reach the proper temperature using a thermometer.
